I have been officially transferred back to St. Louis, effective today! YAY!

I have bought a house. YAY!!!! It's not quite in the neighborhood I want, but pretty close. It's actually in the parish of Epiphany. Barely.

I vaguely remember my last visit...after awhile, all the churches blend together unless something spectacular happens. (like dancing...)

I'd forgotten how plain the interior of the church was. All white except for the woodwork. There was stained glass but it was symbols and not people. It was all white....white...with a tiny tabernacle in the center of the whiteness.

I was sitting there going I can overlook the vast expanses of white if I am spiritually fed, if there is good music.

Hey did you know today is the first day of Advent? I don't think the music director got the memo. The closing song was Soon and Very Soon and then the Communion and Offertory was 670 and 671 in the Breaking Bread. The opening was by Marty Haugen...I want to say 587? No O Come O Come Emmanual? No Advent songs at all???

The homily was about some new scheme Father had to get money or people involved. Ah yes. It's in the bulletin. There are 3 advent goals for the parish. The gold goal...send some teens to Haiti to help the poor heathens. The Frankincense goal...write down what you want the parish to pray for. They will be placed in the "...frankincense container as reminder that as the smoke of the incense raises heavenly ward so does our prayers at each Mass." Incense? They actually use incense here? Oooo.."At each and every Mass as the gifts of bread and wine are brought forward we are invited to the bread and wine as a symbol of our hopes and dreams." (That Jesus guy...his blood and body...not so much...but hope and change...er sorry hope and dreams.. definitely....). Feel the squishy....feel it! The 3rd goal is the myrrh goal...seek out opportunities to die to oneself...we are being challenged to do something 1x a week or even 1x a day that is outside our comfort zone and to die to ourselves in the service of others. Like doing the dishes without complaining, or learning about the Faith. (Funny...protesting and participating in die-ins wasn't mentioned...). I don't know about you...but doing the dishes without complaint, especially when there is a dishwasher involved, doesn't seem so much like dying to myself....

The first part of the homily was about the word Watch. I don't know I wasn't paying attention. I was trying to imagine how if I infiltrated the parish council I could convince/coerce the parish that white...vast expanses of white, are bad....

Before I went to Mass today, I decided that I will give the parish 1 month. If any hugging breaks out though, I'm out of there. It's going to be a long month...
I'm thinking this used to be a Polish community, but now it hosts the Vietnamese Masses every other Sunday.

Music was accompanied by a small electric piano and choir in the front of the church. The choir loft provided extra seating.
Opening: The King of Glory
Offertory: The Summonss
Communion: Whatsoever You Do; Gift of Finest Wheat
Closing: Soon and Very Soon

The homily was given by the Deacon.
Who is your king. Who or what do you let lead your lives. Some say it is cultural. The Irish drink, the German are bullheaded. This is not an excuse. We are called to conversion. Do we let the government detemine our morality or does Jesus determine it? Jesus separates the sheep from goats. He decides who is who. Jesus rules until his enemies under his feet. Jesus puts the sheep on the right. The sheep are the ones who give him food and comfort. When was the last time you called or visited the sick? Have you comforted the stressed or are you the one causing the stress? What if that person is anxious because they need forgiveness from you. Maybe you need to be forgiven. Have you asked? Jesus is King. Who rules your life? Is it Christ the King?

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III and there were bells. And a bake sale after Mass.

Little Rock is home to a Nigerian community. Every 3rd Sunday, they celebrate Mass in Igbo at St. Augustine's in North Little Rock.

I was told by someone that if I arrived 1/2 hour before Mass, Sister would go over the responses. I got to St. Augustine at 1:30 pm, walked in and was greeted by women who were curious as to why I was in Church. I discovered that the Mass had been moved to St. Patrick. (GPS to the rescue!). Fifteen minutes later I'm walking into St. Patrick. The 2nd Reading is currently being read. Apparently Mass started at 1:30 instead of 2 (ooops).

Most of the Mass was in Igbo. The homily and Eucharistic Prayer were in English. Most everything was sung, including the Nicene Creed. Strangely the Our Father wasn't sung.

The music style reminded me of this song or this one from the Lion King Broadway Musical.

In case I was unclear if Father was born in America, the first part of his homily cleared that right up. He actually talked about the First Reading from Proverbs 31. I had a hard time understanding him in the back. In the First Reading, it describes an ideal woman and wife. A role model. Something women should emulate. Men would be happy if women would be these things (riiiight.) Complete happiness. Men must search for this woman, not just go to a club and pick any old women. (mmhmmm). If you find, you will know what makes a woman. Beauty. Her heart makes her beautiful. Do not marry for beauty...beauty fades. Marry for her worth, what she can do. She takes care of her family, her community. Men you must praise and encourage your women. Her reward is your praise. (I prefer sparkly things...). Father then went on to talk about time, talent and treasure. (the standard homily of you need to use your talent and treasure).

At the Presentation of the Gifts, everyone danced up and gave food. (Which apparently the priests eat...I hope they like rice...saw lots of rice). There was some minor chaos at this moment. In the back the men were like this is not what was agreed.

Apparently, it is harvest time in Nigeria, so today is when they would traditionally have their harvest fest. After the Closing Prayer, each family brought up a donation for the Church to auction off. Had this been in Nigeria, it would have been some of the harvest.

Many of the women and men wore traditional clothing. The women wore headdresses that looked like roses...they were folded and wrapped around their heads. The dresses were very sparkly and two pies. The skirts were tight at the top and then flared out at the bottom.

I have some semi-sad news. This is my last actual Mass in Arkansas. There might be one more in late November. I have some more stuff to post so the posts will be going on for a couple more weeks.
I report to St. Louis on 12/1 :D (YAAAAY!!!!!!!) If you know of a house for sale (I'm poor...so no mansions...) drop me a line.

On Saturday I went digging for diamonds (no diamonds....) and then went to Mass in Texarkana AR. I went to St. Edward for the 5 pm Mass.

I was asked again who I was with when I was taking pictures. This time I played dumb and was like where was the bathroom? I look like I just rolled out of the diamond mine....I'm sure I'm with a professional organization...

It was very lovely inside but the windows were the best.

Before Mass the congregation recited the Act of Faith. Then there were announcements.

There must be a shortage of children in the parish as Grandma acted as the server.

Music:
It was accompanied by an organ in the loft.
Opening: Bring Forth the Kingdom
Offertory: Lord of All Hopefulness
Communion: Now We Remain
Closing: O Christ the Great Foundation

Homily:
Father was a non-native speaker of English. Normally I don't have a problem understanding a non-native speaker, but I had a tough time understanding Father. So I apologize for the sketchy homily. In the Gospel of St. John, the Lord works as a Gardner and asks us to produce more fruit (ever since I got that job in agriculture, the Gospel makes more sense.) Our life is the fertile soil. Faith. Love of parents trains us with care. Christ encourages production. We must endure pruning to correct wrongs in our life (I don't want to be pruned....) Instead we watch TV instead of service. Sacrifice shows us how to live life well.

Father used Eucharistic Prayer II and there were bells.
I'm having surgery for my girlie bits on October 15. Feel free to pray (that it goes well...). I could be out anywhere from 2-6 weeks.
Oh. And by the way....
I've been transferred back to St. Louis :D :D :D :DTina aka Snupnjakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10209866349452434099noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7443555219727926481.post-12995341998575062992014-09-28T19:40:00.001-05:002014-09-28T19:42:35.450-05:00St. Mary - ParagouldHello all.
I didn't make it to Mass this weekend because of travel. However I did stop by the other Eames church in Arkansas - St. Mary in Paragould. I wish I could have seen the interior, but as most of you know, churches are only unlocked during Mass.

This morning I trekked out to Subiaco Abbey, which is about 2 hours west of Little Rock. It's a lovely drive and a lovely campus.

The church, named after St. Benedict, is rather large, considering it is near the middle of nowhere Arkansas. It's rather plain on the inside, but in a good way.

As Subiaco is also a boarding school for boys in grades 7-12, the young men also participated in the Mass at 10:45 am, as lectors, servers and ushers.

All of the monks processed in.

Music:
It was a mix of chant and not chant. The music was accompanied by an organ and a piano.
Entrance Chant: I Am Your Savior My People
Gloria: Missa Ubi Caritas
Preparation: There is a Longing
Communion: Loving and Forgiving
Sending Forth: Sing of the Lord's Goodness (YAY! at the correct tempo!!)
The Our Father was chanted. The Lamb of God was interesting. It was sung in English, but Latin was sung over it.

Mini-homily: Jesus calls those to the vineyard. Those who respond will have great rewards.

Homily:
From the 2nd reading, Christ is magnified is our bodies in life and in death. This is true, provided we conduct ourselves in the way of the Gospel. For Paul, this is a win-win. The last line: conduct yourselves worthy of the Gospel. In the Gospel, the workers were called at different times but all were paid equally. God calls us to be fruitful. God rewards all with generosity. All will receive mercy and generosity. What about the workers who worked all day? (Call your union rep!) Can any one really claim lifelong faithfulness? Lifelong fruitfulness. All receive generosity, more than they deserve. Conduct yourself worthy of the Gospel. No complaints (well..uhm...oops) No grumbling (uhm) Not being stingy. God rejoices when we finally repent, even at the last minute. It might be us that think, he's made his bed, now he has to lie in it, that is not God's way. The vinter is not a good business owner (sure he is...) The Gospel life is not miserly or focused on the bottom line. It is open, generous, not fearful. Belief requires Faith. We can't see God and His mercy, we can only get glimpses. God is love. A life worthy of the Gospel entrusts us with this Love. Father then read the Prayer of Abandonment by St. Charles Foucauld.

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III.

(There are pictures about the life of St. Benedict...I like to have such things in order...so I'm reading about his life and will post later :D )
On the Sunday before Labor Day I got really ill. I was sick that entire week. I finally went to the doctor on Friday, who sent me to the ER, because they suspected appendicitis.

It turns out I have 1 or 2 very large cysts on my right ovary. I'll need surgery.

I'm aiming for mid-October and plan to have the surgery in St. Louis. I think my recovery will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks...so if I disappear...that's probably why.

Thanks.Tina aka Snupnjakehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10209866349452434099noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7443555219727926481.post-35234045074401654352014-09-14T20:14:00.001-05:002014-09-14T20:14:19.404-05:00St. Boniface - Fort SmithHi all.
On Saturday I decided to visit Forth Smith to visit the historic site instead of mopping in my apartment. (There will be a 2nd post explaining the mopping.) I managed to visit all 3 parishes in Fort Smith and attended Mass at St. Boniface at 4 pm on Saturday. The parishes were really close together, something I was rather surprised give how spread out everything else is.

You know the best part about doing this? Walking into a Catholic Church and recognizing it as a Catholic Church. I've been in some churches that could be confused for a giant lecture hall. St. Boniface did not disappoint in this aspect.

The music was supplied by a piano and cantor in the choir loft.
Music:
Opening: Lift High the Cross
Offertory: Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent
Communion: We Have Been Told
Closing: How Great Thou Art

So I never really got the whole idea behind Father What-A-Waste...I mean they are priests. Most of them are *old* Yeah. I got it today looking at the priest. Very cute in a rugged way..that's one way to get people to come to Mass.

Mini-Homily:
Means of our Lord's death becomes our redemption.

Homily:
The homily was said by the Deacon. This had to be one of the best homilies by a Deacon I have ever heard. I was impressed. (Which is saying something.)
18 yrs ago when in formation, taking homelitics, something stuck in my mind. A near perfect homilest was talking about how a homily was not an exercise in elocution. It is by the Power of the Cross that I have been given the power of giving homilies. The Feast of the Holy Cross has been around since the 7th century when the True Cross was recovered from the Persians and shown in Jerusalem. The cross is about the triumph of Jesus' love for us. The cross of Moses prefigured Jesus. Moses' cross healed all those who gazed upon it. Jesus was lifted up so that all who believe would have eternal life. God so loved the world, He gave His only Son. The cross is a symbol of all our stains; it is the symbol of our personal relationship with Jesus. Many people think the Cross is a trinket and has extra powers. It is the power of Christ that conquers evil. (Duh...that's what they chant in the Exorcist...). In the 2nd reading, Paul explains that Jesus accepted the worst death to demonstrate God's love for us. Jesus showed us His love of the Father. His death saved us from horror and a meaningless life. Jesus is Lord. His love makes this possible. When we wear the cross, we are showing that Jesus is the Lord of our lives. All of our problems take on infinite (missed this word) when merged with the Cross. All might be saved through the Cross.

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III and there were bells. Additionally there was a 2nd collection. Father explained how he didn't get a raise every time there was a collection but that the money was used to protect the Church's patrimony.

I went to Memphis to look at a possible basset hound for me to adopt. She totally snubbed me so I'm still looking. Since I was on that side of the state, I attended St. Michael in West Memphis.

I attended the 5 pm Vigil on Saturday. It was pretty full. St. Michael's was a nice little church and the people seemed friendly.

Music: Apparently the organist didn't come, so Father randomly picked songs.
Opening: We Gather Together
Offertory: Amazing Grace
Communion: Silence
Closing: Now Thank We All Our God

Homily
I really like our nuns but sometimes we drive each other crazy (I see). Father then related a story about how he and Sister were driving somewhere and Father asked Sister to give the trucker the finger (the scandal). So Sister gave him a thumbs up. In today's Gospel, Jesus says if something bothers you, you need to address it yourself. But we don't do that. We go to the authorities first. We go the person last. Cops say domestic disputes are the worst, because there are no winners. When we have a problem with another person we gossip or call the authorities but we don't confront that person. It is very difficult. We don't like to be confrontational. (some of us live for confrontation....) When someone is bothering us, ask is it worth it? Is it worth getting the authorities involved? Look at your priorities. Let it go instead of making a big deal out of it. If you don't like something that a priest does, don't call the bishop first, let it go (somebody's gotten in trouble....). We have to stop passive-aggressive behavior (*blink* but it is so much *fun*).

Father used one of the Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs...it was all about love. There were bells at the Consecration.

I was impressed. Mass was over in 33 minutes.
I'd like to wish all my St. Louis readers a Happy Feast of St. Louis! I wish I was there to celebrate and go to a mass in French (and to get the plenary indulgence and the ice cream...).

I was in Tunica this weekend, gambling the rent money, and passed through Helena, AR (It's a combined city...Helena West Helena). I decided to return here for 10 am Mass on Sunday morning. It's a really nice church for Arkansas and it is the second one with walls the color of my parents' living room. (I picked that color out and did the painting so I'm real familiar with it.). I wish I had known the church was designed by Charles Eames (SQUEE!! The Powers of Ten guy!!!!!!). The windows were done by Emil Frei (I wondered why St. Louis was in the window...). I got to Mass 5 minutes before it started and like most churches, the lights were off 10 minutes after Mass :( I'd have taken a picture of the ceiling had a known. (Eames designed a second church in Arkansas.....and I pass it every time I go to St. Louis....very interesting....) Wow. Who would of thought. Helena AR was big when cotton was king and is the site of a huge Blues Festival (King Biscuit Blues Fest), as it had a thriving blues community in 1940s & 1950s. Apparently, besides cotton, the other major industry was rubber. When the rubber plant closed, the town has faced rough economic times. It's apparently one of the poorest cities in the nation....(which doesn't surprise me in the least...).

Everyone was dressed rather nice (except me...ooops). The pastor is going back to the Congo for the next month, so his replacement was introduced this morning.

The music was supplied by an organ (and maybe bells) and a choir in the loft!
Music:
Opening: The Church's One Foundation
Offertory: Only This I Want; Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silent
Communion: You Satisfy the Hungry Heart
Closing: Holy God We Praise Thy Name

Homily: (For a change, I thought you'd like to see my actual notes, not the cleaned up version. I had my ipad with me so I took digital notes.)
Word of god challenges us on authority
Symbolized by keys
Shopping for car.. Story of peter with big keys pope kisses statue not true

Prophet Isaiah speaks to man incharge of palace...chief of staff or prime minister
People who have lot of authority
God says will throw out and replace
All symbols will be given to him
Not good news if you threaten those with power...died in a "road accident". How people with big powers behave
Keys are given symbolize of authority
Have responsibility
Not only to those to government
Responsibility in family..
Parents are everything...have power, give displace and security
Difficult without parents when are young
Responsibility when you farm... Teach others..gives authority
It is nothing if not at service
Not priest for self...for others
What is point without congregation
U are good teacher when your students succeed (ugh...education reformy language)
Authority do your best
Peter has authority in faith
Only man god choose. That god reveleaded to him...who the son was and the father
Through peter we know that Jesus is son of god
Who do you say I am...Jesus continues to ask us
What is your answer...determined your commitment
When man and woman together,...what they call each other determines the commitment
If we never say Jesus is god, we don't have right relationship
He's not prophet, he is son of god...we profess this everyday

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III and there were bells at the Consecration. The Holy Holy and the Lamb of God were sung in Latin and the Our Father was sung.

During the announcements, a note from Bishop Taylor was mentioned and Father further talked about it. Basically, the Bishop is asking us to pray to stop the Black Mass in Oklahoma. Father discussed it and talked about spiritual warfare. Additionally, Father mentioned when Confirmation was this year and if you'd never been Confirmed, it wasn't too late. (wow...topics I rarely here about at Mass.)
I'm back on track. Going to Mass. :) Until next weekend...and the weekend after that..and the weekend after that....(I'm going out of town (Tunica!), will do my bestest.)

This morning I headed to the blink and you missed it town known as St. Vincent. It's about an hour or so away from Little Rock to the west.

The church was built in 1931, but it looks like the interior has been redone more recently. I have to say they have the narrowest pews I've sat in for a modern church. The pews had to be about foot on the part you sit on. Not comfy in the slightest. It was pretty plain on the inside, but nice.

Music: There was an organ and small choir in the front of the church.
Opening: All Are Welcome
Offertory: Isaiah 49
Communion: Come Gather At the Table
Closing: Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

Homily:
Send her away say the disciple; not one of their finest moments (there are quite a few of these actually...). The words seem so heartless, have they no compassion? Jesus seems indifferent to the woman. He was silent. Jesus was up to something. He was waiting to show His cards. What is their motivation? The disciples were physically tired...they had been following Jesus around, they were tired of the requests. They were crabby. Enough is enough. We can see that in us. Additionally, it was very important to know who were in and who were out. It was unthinkable to acknowledge someone who was out (It's like high school...). What did Jesus do? He verbalized the deep seated prejudices at the time. The woman senses what Jesus is doing. Jesus is confronting man made barriers and ridiculous grudges. Jesus did not buy into injustice. He and the woman were in search of goodness. He tells the woman that her Faith is great. The disciples were closed minded, narrow viewed, cold hearted and lacking in Faith. The woman was open minded, broad viewed and warm hearted and had great Faith (cause she's a woman...and we awesome.) This is not a window into the past. The prejudice continues today. We like to inclusive/exclusive; based on how much they are like us. We make hurtful distinctions about who is one of us and who is not. God's love has no boundaries. All of us have people in our life that need our love, compassion and understanding, but we fail to give it to them.

Father verbalized all the secret prayers and used Eucharistic Prayer III, with bells.

A family member and I got into a huge argument last night. This family member is leaving the Catholic Church and being baptized into the Baptist Church. Normally, I would just be like whatever and put up a token protest. Of course, there is a complication. Namely 3. I am Godmother to this person's children (2 of 3 and would have been to all 3 if the pastoral administrator hadn't gotten creative.) I reminded (as nonconfrontationally as possible...but you've read my blog...) that they and I had gotten up before the Catholic Church and promised to raise these children Catholic. Needless to say, this person took exception to be reminded of the Baptismal promises. This person claimed they never had a choice to be baptized. I accepted that reminded them that they stood up since then 3 times to baptize these children. I got a lot of well the children think Mass is boring. The homilies are boring. There is nothing the Church offers the children like Vacation Bible School and bible study. They aren't learning anything in PSR. I tried to remind them that it is their responsibility as parent to teach. I also reminded them that the world is boring and you'd just better get used to it. What happens when they (they are in 3rd and 1st grade) find school boring? Are you just going to stop going? Oh they love school... I tried to tell her that religion is not a shoe, it is not about a "fit" Then I was reminded of my responsibilities as a godparent and how I've utterly failed. Which I freely admit and accept. I have done a terrible job. But I couldn't just let this go. Needless to say, this has escalated to Facebook, where terribly unChristian things are being said. (I'm thinking this baptism isn't going to stick either).

Needless to say I didn't fall asleep until 5 am because I was so upset and only slept for 2 hours. Two hours of horrible dreams of black tendrils pulling at me, pulling me down. Fell back asleep at 10 for two more hours. I'm totally out of it.
Hope everyone is having a nice cool Sunday. It's hot here. It's humid. It's awful. I'm so glad I live when and where AC is available.

Unlike Missouri, Arkansas' grape harvest is starting right about now. The wineries here don't really celebrate Oktoberfest (the Swiss one does though). This weekend, the grape growing area had a grape fest. Free wine tasting. 100 degree heat. Someone's not feeling all that great. My co-workers were worried that I would not be in any shape to drive the 2 hours back and I was like I'm going to Mass...I'll be fine by the time it is over. Yeah. Except I was not in the best shape for Mass. My shirt was soaked with sweat. I'm buzzed. If you have met me while buzzed, you know that staying quiet is a challenge. So are some other things but I'm good Catholic woman who shouldn't know about such things.

St. Mary overlooks the entire Altus valley. It's on a hill, up one of the most horrid roads especially considering it is a tourist area. The name on the cornerstone was Our Lady, Help of Christians. (I'm really surprised that Churches in wine country aren't named after the patron saint of wine or grapes: St. Martin of Tours, St. Vincent of Saragossa and St. Amand)

I walked into the Church and nearly cried (It was the wine...honest). St. Mary's looks like a Catholic Church. Big fancy high altars and side altars. Stained glass windows featuring Saints. Murals on the walls. The ceiling was decorated as well as the columns and the the archways. Huge Stations of the Cross. Old, uncomfortable pews and kneelers. Painted organ pipes. It was like I was back in the older churches in St. Louis. The only thing out of place was the glass confessional. I kid you not. Glass --see through walls. At least they had the decency to hang curtains. Although I wonder how long that took.

I always forget how much better choirs sound when they are up in the loft. The music seems to fill the Church without the need for microphones. Music was accompanied by an organ (with pipes!) and a choir.
Opening: I Know My Redeemer Lives (apparently there are 2 songs of that title in the book. The choir sang one and the people the other....)
Mass Setting: Heritage Mass
Offertory: Earthen Vessels
Communion: Shepherd of Souls
Closing: Lead Me Lord

Mass was said by one of the Benedictines from Subiaco Abbey. Apparently, the parish has had a hard time getting a full time regular priest.

Homily:
For the last few Sundays, Jesus has been speaking to us in parables. Today it is the Pearl of Great Price and the Fish. Parables were very important in ancient times. It was a way for people to remember the story and the lesson. We have bad memories now thanks to all the tv and internet in our lives. (I blame google.) I'm going to focus on the net collecting fish. The net collects the fish, both good and bad and then the fishermen keep the good fish and toss the bad (Are you a good fish or a bad fish?). Fishing was important back then because people didn't eat meat. (So all those stories about sheep? what did they do with the sheep???) The Kingdom of Heaven is like that. It is a hidden thing that we can't see. It must be drawn out. We are called to live and be a part of the Kingdom of Heaven through the Sacraments and by the life we lead. We must work to pull the good out from the bad. As we live or try to live the Christian life, we are surrounded by a society that forgets Christian life (and actively tries to destroy it...) The Angels will separate the good fish from the bad. We struggle to see this. We might not see the difference between fish. (Indeed). Is it worth the effort? I try to live a good Christian life yet others are doing better than me. What use is it? We are called to do this. Ponder the 2nd verse from today's Responsorial Psalm (Psalm 119). We may fall away but as Christians we are called o have this as Your delight.

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III (seems to be a favorite around here) and there were bells.

It was nice Mass. I even met a doctor from St. Louis. :)

Pictures: I know the last couple of churches have been rather, uhm, stark. This should make up for it nicely. Some are missing because someone can't take steady shots buzzed. I'll be going back in the fall for Oktoberfest.
Sorry this post is late. My bestest bud is moving and I was making a quilt for a housewarming gift and I'm on a tight deadline. (It's very lovely :) )

On Sunday morning, I attended the 8:30 am Mass at Assumption in Atkins (home of the Pickle Fest!). It's a smallish church (but was packed) that is a bit plain on the inside.

Music was accompanied by an organ and choir in the back.
Opening: Gather Us In
Mass Setting: Mass of Wisdom
Offertory: Seek Ye First
Communion: Take & Eat This Bread
Blessing for Choir Director: A Blessing
Closing: O God, Our Help in Ages

Homily:
Whoever has ears aught to hear. Jesus is telling parables to those who acknowledge them. Parables are practical stories with deeper meaning. They tend to be about farming because everyone who was listening was familiar with farming (I will say I get the parables more now that I work in agriculture..). Our salvation is part of the harvest. The fruit is our lives. The devil is a weed that chokes off the fruits of our lives. We need to live our Faith. God has planted the seed in us. We need to grow and bear fruit. The challenge is that we are surrounded by temptations. The world tries to choke off Faith: ignore, persecute, ridicule and destroy Faith. People lose sight and fall away. No one helps them to bear fruit. We live for God; life for all eternity. We see it in the world. If we don't have a good foundation, we lose Faith. The Spirit is there even if we don't know it.

Father used Eucharistic Prayer 2 and there were bells.

It was a nice Mass.
Yesterday, I attended the 5 pm Mass at St. Francis of Assisi in Little Italy. This church had no address. I just drove down the highway until I was there (and didn't get lost).

It's a mission church that was established in 1922. It was a bigger church then I was expecting given the location. Relatively plain on the inside but it did have paintings depicting the life of St. Francis on the walls.

Music was provided by an organ in the back.
Opening: All Creatures of Our God & King
Offertory: For the Fruits of This Creation
Communion: Gift of Finest Wheat
Closing: Let All Things Now Living

Mini-Homily:
The Word of God is seed planted in us, we await the bountiful harvest.

Homily:
Humans we are a beautiful imperfect creatures living in an imperfect world. It's a car insurance ad. De we listen to the Word? That is important to understand. We are imperfect because we are human. We have so many distractions take away from the Word. How we receive is difference. Keeps us from listening. If we listen, we produce much fruit. Things keep us from listening. Right now people are not listening here and now (la..la. la. la) We have to be attentive in order to listen to Word. Without distractions we bear much fruit.

It was bound to happen. I've visited over 300 churches and nary an issue, getting lost doesn't count. While going through a blink and you missed it town, someone (yours truly) got caught in a speed trap. The fee is my gas budget for the month. And some of my food budget. If you'd like to help by buying me some gas so I can keep visiting churches, send me an email. ;) I've learned my lesson (don't get caught...)

I went to Dumas, AR to the 11:15 am Mass at Holy Child of Jesus. This is another small church with a small congregation. There were no more than 25 people at Mass. I think I might have been the youngest adult. Thankfully some kids came...cause for awhile...I was the youngest person in the building. Although Father might have been my age. He's from Ghana.

There was an organ but everything was sung a capella.
Opening: Rejoice in the Lord Always
Offertory: See Us Lord About Your Altar
Communion: Silence
Closing: Let There Be Peace on Earth

Mini-homily:
Come to Me. Bring Me your challenges. I will change your life.

Homily:
If you see someone starts laughing, you ask why. If they say they are happy you ask why. Jesus tells us to rejoice. God has a reason. I'm coming to you as a King. When I come, I will reveal Mysteries to you. How can you read the mind of God. Jesus tells us the mind of God. Rejoice. What God can do for you? (It's like what can brown for you....except I bet God won't run over my packages....) The humble are ready to learn from God. But not the learned. Knowledge is power. Jesus says to get up and go. When your brother calls you on the phone, you may not answer because you know he wants something. Jesus is always accessible. Come to Him. We need rest on Earth. He gives us peace and joy. An appointment is an agreement between 2 parties. Jesus makes an appointment with you. Anytime I open my doors, come and bring challenge, I will change life. If Jesus invites you in, you must bring something (brownies!). A spiritual heart and mind (brownies are better). Human logic will fail. Walking on water, Peter was successful until he applied human logic. Jesus's healing doesn't make sense with human logic. Just come. If He invites you, only come with Faith. Get away from distractions. The brothers of the paralyzed man had no distractions, they took off the roof to get their brother to Jesus. What is your problem? It is not bigger than Jesus. Get up and go to Him. Leave your problems here today.

It was a nice little Mass and a nice little church.
No I haven't quit going to Mass. The week before I was in St. Louis and last week, I went to my territorial parish.

Guess what? This weekend was the Feast of Corpus Christi. According to one parish bulletin I read, there are big processions and celebrations in other countries (like St. Louis) for the feast. After much searching, I did manage to find a Corpus Christi procession at St. James in Searcy, AR. It's about an hour northeastish from Little Rock (on the way home actually). St. James and its sister parishes, St. Albert and St. Richard, all came together to celebrate this Feast at one Mass at 4 pm.

Something interesting also occurred during Mass. The parish has its first priestly vocation. To celebrate the event, after the Homily, there was a big signing of the letter of intent with the Bishop, almost as if he were going to play football or something. I've never seen anything like it.

Music:
Opening: Alleluia! Sing to Jesus.
Gloria: Heritage Mass
Offertory: I Am the Living Bread
Communion: Behold the Lamb (Solo), Panis Angelicus (LATIN!)
Procession & Bendiction: Lots of songs in Spanish, O Sacrament Most Holy, Down in Adoration (LATIN) Holy God We Praise Thy Name
Closing: Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

Mass was interesting. It took an hour to get to the petitions. The main reason was that most everything was said in English and then repeated in Spanish or vice versus. That's right. I heard the homily 2x. In English and in Spanish. The Petitions, Procession of Faith and Our Father were in English. The Eucharistic Prayer (II) and the closing prayer was in Spanish. The beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist kept switching language. I'm now more convinced that Latin is the way to go for the parts of the Mass that don't change every day. I heard non native English speakers and non native Spanish speakers both speak the responses in the other language. People can be taught.

The homily was given by the Bishop.
Like many of you, I'm dismayed by how our culture has lost its moral bearing. There is no more living for other or for a higher purpose. Pope Francis talked about an economy of exclusiveness. We put the self ahead of the family. We repackage religion to accommodate me. We want artificial contraception, easy divorce, abortion, and now same-sex marriage. We have put self-interest above the common good. We have hardened our hearts to the poor. We act as if life is a zero sum game. We have ignored the family as the basic cell of society and have made it instead the individual. The Church is family. Sacrifice for the common good. The result is a religion that wants what is best for us (even if it makes us miserable). We are building the Kingdom for God. It is a win win for us. We have an economy of inclusion (clearly the bishop hasn't been exposed to cliques...) In the First Reading, we see how God provides. The Hebrews survived because they obeyed God. In the 2nd Reading, St. Paul tells us we are made one by the Body and Blood of Christ. The Gospel tells us the Eucharist unites us and gives us Eternal Life. In the Eucharist, Jesus provides and shows the path through the moral desert and idolatry of self. Do not forget God who led you out of Egypt. Society/culture says Catholics are out of touch. We are counter cultural. The culture is sick. Catholics are in touch with the Truth (some more than others...I feel like a comment about truthiness would be good here). The Lord feeds us to make a difference. We are called to bring God's Salvation to others (one facebook argument at a time).

One thing I did notice was that the altar servers acted as the ushers for the collections.

The Corpus Christi procession was really nice. There were Knights and flags and girls in white dresses throwing flower petals. We walked around the church to an altar set up in a field and then walked back.

The people were really nice! They invited me to a potluck supper. It was yummy.

It's hot here in Arkansas. I'm also working on my ark.

This week I attended the 4 pm Vigil at St. Richard in Bald Knob. It has a cute exterior and is tiny on the inside. This is one of the few churches I've been to where I can't "pretend" to kneel by having my butt rest on the pew edge. The pews were pretty widely spaced.

The music was accompanied by an electronic organ in the back.
Opening: Creator Spirit, By Whose Aid
Mass Setting: Heritage Mass
Offertory: Come Holy Ghost
Communion: One Bread, One Body
Closing: Go Make of All Disciples

Have you ever forgotten where we were in the Liturgical Calendar? I'm at Mass last night (before the songs were changed on the board) and I notice that Father is putting on red vestments and I'm like is it Corpus Christi already? Totally forgot about Pentecost. I'm never going to hear the Sequence am I?

Homily:
Today is the highpoint of the Easter celebration..Pentecost. 50 days after Passover the Jewish celebrate the law giving on Mt. Sinai. God gave the 10 Commandments to show them how to be a people of God. This means behaving in a way God wants, not the way we think is right. As humans we have a short cycle. When we try to take the initiative with God, disaster follows, for example, the Tower of Babel. This is to remind you of the Acts of the Apostles tomorrow...they speak in another language, Pentecost is a reversal of this. God decided to build a bridge. When humans build the bridge, you get Babel. God give us Pentecost. After the Ascension, the task is too big for the Apostles. They need God's initiative to go out and preach. What God asks is impossible if we rely only on ourselves. At the opportune time, God will send out the Holy Spirit to make the lukewarm into the zealous (How about before my next facebook argument about God's existence and morality...because I'm over my head.) Misunderstanding to understanding. There was misunderstanding at Babel. The miracle of Pentecost is they all heard in their own language. Love is the language everyone understands (eye roll). Love is the language of the Children of God and Heaven. At Babel, the human family was broken up. Pentecost brings the family together. It is the Birthday of the Church (I had a cupcake!) We benefit from our difference. Holy Spirit flows through us to inspire us to a more Christian life (any day now...) the Holy Spirit helps us in the life of Faith (but not in Facebook arguments :P ) Unity. We are one body united in Faith, cleansed and made holy by the Sacraments. It keeps the Chancery and the Pope free of error ( I think he meant Magisterium...not the Chancery...or we have some big issues..).

Father used Eucharistic Prayer II and there were bells.
On another note, I'm currently involved in facebook discussions on God's existence, morality and other fun stuff. I could really use some better background. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please don't suggest St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. They are awesome but way beyond me at this point.
I had meant to go to a church in West Memphis, which is in Arkansas, but the times didn't work for me and the road construction is extra *special.* I found the earliest, closest Mass to the hotel.

I attended the 7:30 am Mass at Holy Rosary. This looks like a typical, middle to upper-middle class parish. The 7:30 Mass had no music.

My brain was not functioning as my sister had to go the ER in the middle of the night. (she's better) I forgot to bring paper and pen. This is what I remember of the homily. There were only 11 men that witnessed the Ascension. They were praying very hard in the upper room (Praying...cowering in terror..same thing). They had the marching orders but not the impetus. There was a man named Milo who wanted to be a priest in Mexico during the Revolution. He studied in Texas and Belgium and was a Jesuit. He went around saying Mass even though it was forbidden. If he was caught, he would be arrested (if not just shot outright) Eventually he was caught and sentenced to death. The governor tried to get Milo to recant his Faith through fear and intimidation and all sorts of fun stuff. Milo would not. Milo was put in front of a firing squad. The soldiers fired and missed. On purpose. The Captain threw a wobbly. Milo yelled Viva Cristo Rey! and the soldiers fired. (All i could thing about was how wrong the approach was. You don't win people over with fear and intimidation. You win them over by kindness and reason and stuff like that. You win by inches..not by going for miles. Look at the American Catholic Church...the bishops have given in on days of abstinence, nuns wearing habits, holy days of obligation, saying the black, doing the red...etc....it's like we are nearly protestant....no revolution needed.)
There's a swamp near Pine Bluff and I was like cool I'll go to Church there. Except I couldn't remember which church I went to. I looked at their pics online and am like I recognize neither. I'll go to the one with the earlier Mass time and be back in time to get baklava and listen to Irish music at the Greek Fest. (Jazz Music at the German Fest...Irish Music at the Greek Fest...Irish Music at the Jewish Fest...wonders what is played at the Irish Fest...)

I'm driving to Mass and I was like this look vaguely familiar. Oh noes. I recognize that dilapidated house... Oh noes.... I've been to this church before. Now in St. Louis, or any place really really Catholic, this is not a tragedy. In the city at least, you just go like a mile in another direction and you hit a church. Here in Arkansas that is fraught with issues. Most towns only have 1 and they only have 1 Mass. And it may or may not be on Sunday. Luckily, Pine Bluff is bigger and has 3.... and I didn't miss Mass at one of them.

I attended the 11 am Mass at St. Joseph. It's an older church. The choir loft is really high. It's so high I don't think I could stand in it. Well, not with out a lot of extra praying.

Sometimes older churches smell really nice, like the incense and candles have soaked into the wood and stone. St. Joseph had an odor..unfortunately, it wasn't incense. (This will become important later on)

Music was supplied by the organ in the loft with a cantor.
Opening: Festival Canticle
Offertory: We Have Been Told
Communion: Taste and See
Closing: Sent Forth By God's Blessing

Today was the Graduation Mass, so all the graduates were there in their caps and gowns. All were college students. I won't ask where the grade schoolers or high schoolers were...

Father's homily started off with a story about a man named Matthew Henry who lived around 200 years ago. He loved Jesus with all his heart and he knew his time was coming. He knew his family and friends would be heartbroken when he died so he left them a letter. Father read the letter. To summarize the letter spoke of how the writer with Jesus in the Father's dwelling place and was perfect in holiness (Clearly this guy is a protestant...) This letter is similar to today's Gospel. Where I am you may also be. For Jews, only God is the way. Jesus says He is the way. The Father and I are one. This is a huge claim and why the Jews rejected Jesus. The Father and I are equal. What does it mean? Jesus is the visible manifestation... and at this point I just started coughing and had to go outside for a moment. and missed the rest of the homily :(

Father used Eucharistic Prayer III and there were bells at the Consecration. Father also gave the graduates a special blessing at the end of Mass.
I was exhausted from going hiking after Mass. I climbed to the highest peak in Arkansas. Then on Monday night I had softball. I love getting walked!

On Sunday, May 11, I headed out to Paris, AR for the 9 am Mass at St. Joseph Church. It is an old style church and was pretty.

Music was accompanied by an organ in the choir loft.
Opening: Alleluia! Alleluia!
Offertory: Hail Mary: Gentle Woman
Communion: Pan de Vida (instrumental), Let Us Break Bread Together (at a funeral pace)
Closing: Jesus is Risen

The Gloria was not sung. The congregation started saying it, got lost, and just kind of stopped. Father made us redo it.

Why do churches put the cry room in the choir loft???

Homily:
The Deacon gave the homily. Because it was Mother's Day, he asked for the Mom with the oldest child (odd) and the newest mom. Something changes when girls have babies (yeah...their hips). God knows what mothers need and gives them the tools to be good mothers (so bad moms didn't pick up the tools?) You only appreciate your mother once you have kids of your own. A mother is a mother for ever. Mothering is out of pure love (no comment). The history of mothers: Eve, then Mary, then Mother church (and you missed some generations...). The history of Mothers' Day goes back to when the early church had a day when you were to go back to the church you were baptized in, that was your mother church and the day was Mother's Day. (Uhm...he does realize that most people in the early church didn't tend to move all that far from the place they were born....it's not like they had planes or cars or anything... and on this bright note the Church I was baptized in is closed/suppressed. Guess I don't have a mom church. Excellent.) Mothers' Day is not a liturgical holiday (but we are going to treat it like one) To tie it into the Gospel, mothers are shepherds (oh this is a stretch). Shepherds slept outside the gate to keep out the wolves. The wolves would smell the human and go away. In the morning, the shepherd would open the gate and the sheep would follow the call. The image of Jesus carrying a sheep comes from when, in the old days, lambs were rambunctious and would run off. The shepherd would break the lamb's leg and therefore would need to carry the lamb everywhere. The lamb would then stay close to the shepherd when the lamb was healed in 2-3 weeks. (*blink* I don't even know where to begin on this fail. Seriously. Other than to go stop reading wikipedia and talk to the ranchers/4H people in your parish....) Now this doesn't mean you should break your rambunctious child's leg (I'm glad you added that qualifier there...) We all need a hit upside the head to follow (Because when love doesn't work, violence is the answer..). Mother wants to lead us to Church, to Jesus (that only works if your mom is a practicing Catholic and not a CAPE, C&E, or somebody died Catholic). They do this completely out of love. We hold mothers in high esteem (yet we trash stay at home moms).

The Deacon then gave a special blessing to all the mothers. There were about 5 adult women who did not get to stand for the blessing. One woman looked very very unhappy. Then all the mothers got to come up and get a rose. Here's a tip: over buy your roses. There is nothing worse than running out before all the moms get one and then having to go raid flowers in the sacristy....

One of the petitions were for Mothers who gave some quality to Earth ( I have no idea)

Father used Eucharistic Prayer II. There were bells at the Consecration. The Our Father was sung.
